Fall Fashion 411 - Fall Trends Series 2012. Part 1

Remember my Fall Trends Series from 2011? Well! That took a lot of work and even though it was so much fun it was also tedious but I found that lots of people actually liked it & it was actually helpful. I already started hunting for new pieces of clothing for this year's trend series but I am not positive if im in it for the long haul. If that is something you would like to see, please let me know! If not, then it's going out the window! Plus, I am a little late on that anyways.

Think of this as a Fall Trend Series extension for 2012. As of the last 2 months or so, I did some damage with new clothes. One of the things I purchased from American Eagle while they were having their $30 jeans sale was a rhapsody colored pair of pants. Since Rhapsody is one of the Fall colors for 2012 on the Pantone color panel, I want to give you ideas on how to wear colored pants in a stylish way. You will be surprised at how many outfits you can make out of 1 pair of colored pants.

This blog post will be, for the most part, my humble opinion on ways to wear different colors and prints together.  In college, I took a fashion history class. Some of the things I learned in that class will be here too. Here are some easy guidelines to follow on ways to put a flattering outfit together in what you might think are surprising ways. I really hope a light bulb will go off in your head and you venture out into mixing colors & prints this season!

Exhibit A
Mixing a Color with a Neutral Print
Quite possibly the easiest one to figure out. Instead of wearing a colored shirt, go with a neutral print to match your colored jeans/pants. I like this because it is trendy without being too loud. You have your bird print (trendy!) with a peter pan collar (also trendy!) in black and cream.

JC Penney's top was $9!

Exhibit B
Mixing colors.
The easiest one in my opinion to feel like it doesn't fit. A basic rule of thumb to use when mixing colors: does it look appealing to you? If so, then your good! If you want more inspiration, here's a couple more tips:

#1. Pantone Color Panel:
The rule of thumb on any color panel is that every single color on the panel goes with every other color. Click to see Pantone's Fall 2012 Color Panel.

#2. Use the exact same color in different hues
Monochromatic color scheme
ex: light purple with bright purple*

#3. Use the exact same hue of different colors
ex: deep purple with deep orange*

#4. Using a Primary Color Scheme

Blue, Red and Yellow are the primary colors. All three look good in the same outfit*

#5. Using a Secondary Color Scheme
Same as primary colors, secondary colors pair great in an outfit. You could use all three: Orange, Green, & Purple.*

#6. Using a Triad Color Scheme

As easy as it sounds. Look to the color wheel. Which colors make a triangle in the wheel? You notice that both the primary colors and the secondary colors are in a triangle formation on the color wheel. This trick can be used with any colors on the color wheel.
ex: pink, green, & brown create a triad color scheme.*

#7. Using a Complementary Color Scheme
Whatever color is right across from your color is complementary of it.
ex: green and red are complementary.*

#8. Using an Analogous Color Scheme
Refer to the color wheel. Find your color. Either color next to it make all 3 analogous color. You can also split the color wheel into two parts and think of it as being warm colors (yellow through red) vs. cool colors (purple through green). With analogous color's, they could mix both warm and cool colors as well, overlapping each other. ex: your color is pink. Pink will go perfectly with blue and purple.*

My outfit would fall under the analogous color scheme. Both colors are next to each other on the color wheel. Just because they aren't the same hue or color doesn't mean they don't fit! I think the white undershirt makes the outfit a little brighter, but I also sometimes wear this with a dark purple undershirt. Another great idea would be to go with any blue colored undershirt.
If your looking to try this out, check out Wet Seal. They have basic tops, & tank tops in all different colors and some cute neutral prints. all 5 for only $20!

Exhibit C
Mixing 2 Colors with Prints

 Step #1. Choose your color.
Mine is the color Rhapsody in the jeans.

#2. Choose a print:
The same rule with mixing different colors. Mix different colors with the same hue-or- mix the same color with a different hue, 1 being a solid color and 1 being a print. I am choosing my leopard print scarf and that is a different color with the same muted, soft hue. The color of the scarf is called Rose Smoke, also from the Pantone Color Panel.

#3. Choose another print in the same print
You can omit this if you feel what you have is enough. If not, choosing a second print is as easy as pie. An example of what I mean by another print in the same print is this. Say your print is leopard (as mine is), find another article with a different leopard print on it, as I did with my leopard scarf and undershirt. They are both leopard print but not exact replica's of each other. In my opinion it adds interest without being too tacky

If your going with a second print, be sure not to over do with. I think the scarf going along with the undershirt isn't as loud as a blouse with a scarf, both being prints. It's too much in my opinion. A subtle pop of print here and there is nice. Another cute idea to add your print of choice would be in a leopard bow on a neutral pair of shoes.

#4 Complete the outfit:

I have a Titanium (a grey color) V-neck which completes the outfit. At this point, it's best to find some flattering neutral pieces to complete the outfit. Adding another print or color might not be in good taste so this, to me, is perfect.

With these "rules", the possibilities seem endless

So, Class!

How have you been mixing it up with your clothing lately?
Whats your favorite outfit in this post?
Whats your least favorite?
Is there anything else you would have done different?

disclaimer: Almost all of these "rules" are my opinion. I am not a professional. I did however take a fashion history class in college and did quite well! Some of these rules are what I learned in the class. They will be marked with an*. Basically, anything you read in exhibit B I learned in college.

Happy Mixing,
Erica

Spring Trends: Margarita

Hey there! Welcome to another chapter of my semi-annual Seasonal Trends Series! I am taking all of the colors declared by Pantone to be deemed the trendiest colors on the runway and used by fashion designers. This includes what color to wear with what (declared by designers, not declared by me of course! haha!), The color of the year, & trends that do not include colors. I have already done Sweet Lilac, Cockatoo, & Tangerine Tango

As I have mentioned before, I really loovve this season's colors. So many good ones! Lots of pastels too! I am not really big on green. This green? that is another story! it is gorgeous! I am extremely fond of pastels and I would say this is kinda close to a pastel. let's say it's a neighbor of the pastels.

1. Hoops from Old Navy ( I love those! )
2. Heels from Bakers (spot on Margarita!)
3. Flats from Bakers
4. Top from Kohl's by Lauren Conrad
5. Illamasqua Eyeshadow in Pivot
6. Essie Nail Polish in Navigate Her! (another one that is spot on!)

Prominent Colors & Influences for NAHM this season: "Laos and Paris in the '70s were a big influence — we used prints with Buttery Yellows, Warm Oranges, Powdery Blues and Seafoam Green".

NAHM is Ally Hilfigher & Nary Manivong's line. I really like these colors paired.

1. Dress from ShopRuche.com
2. Same Heels from above: Bakers
3. Bag from Charlotte Russe
4. Bangles from Forever 21

Spring Trends Series: Fashion Color Report: Sweet Lilac (part2)

Hey everyone! Thank you so much for stopping by for the second installment of this Spring Trend Series! Part 1 was about the color of the year Tangerine Tango. If you missed it, please go back and check it out because it also mentions Sweet Lilac. This part will be about Sweet Lilac, another trendy color this season. Sweet Lilac is my absolute favorite color for this spring. It is described as a delicate pinkish lilac that adds a touch of romance to any wardrobe. This color with a hint of purple is also described as the "New Neutral" and can paired with almost anything

1. Dress from ShopRuche.com
2. Nars Launch for Spring 2012 Blush in Gaiety
3. O.P.I. Pink Friday from the Nicki Minaj Collection
4. Top From Kohl's by Elle
5. Dress From Kohl's by Lauren Conrad
6. Dress from Kohl's by Apt 9.
7. From MAC's  Too Supreme Collection in Royal Azalea
8. Top From Kohl's by Elle
9. Dress From Abercrombie & Fitch

"I like tones of one color, the spectrum of a Bright Green into a soft fading Jade, a Bright Neon Pink into a Soft Blush tone" Rebecca Minkoff

I really agree with Rebecca in that light. I always love layering a light pink with a dark pink. Using the same same in an outfit but layering pieces of different hues from that color. So what I did below was I took the Sweet Lilac color, which would be a blush tone pinkish lilac & layered it with Cabaret (another color for this spring) which is an intense rosy- red.

1. Shoes from Charlotte Russe
2. Bangles from Forever 21
3. Bow Bracelet from Forever 21
4. Ruffle Tank from Abercrombie & Fitch
5. Sweet Lilac Jeans from ShopRuche.com (another trend! colored jeans!)

For more on this color & other colors, visit Pantone. They are national authority of color Sounds weird but it is true

Color of the Year 2012!

I hope you join me for my 3rd series of the Spring/Fall trends series that I have done since the beginning- it was so much fun making this and I do hope I can inspire you with colors, fashion,& trends! For the beginning of the series, I am going to talk about the colors of the season, day by day, declared by Pantone, the global authority of color. They went to NY Fashion Week & beyond to find out the prominent hues as well as color trends. Now I will take you through all of the trends for spring/summer 2012!

It is only logical to to start with the color of the year, Tangerine Tango, which is described as a provocative, vivacious, enticing juicy orange.

1. Dress from Kohl's by Elle
2. O.P.I. A Roll in the Hague from the Holland Collection
3. Necklace from Charlotte Russe
4. MAC Sheen Supreme Lipglass in Mango Sheen
5. Charlotte Russe Bootie
6. Purse from Shoedazzle

There are plenty of ways to wear 2012's color of the year, and according to Adrienne Vittadini, hot colors are great with other hot colors & cool colors are great with other cool colors.

Wedges: Bakers
Dress: ShopRuche.com
Bag: Clifton from Shoedazzle
Necklace: Forever 21

Mixing hot neons with soft pastels is a huge trend this spring.

According to Nanette Lepore, a great variaton would be using the vibrant Tangerine Tango, with Sweet Lilac, which she is calling the "new neutral" which has a hint of purple.

1. I can't recall....I missed the bus and forgot to write it down- oops! I wanna say Asos
2. Captivated Love Rosette Top from ShopRuche.com
3. Shoedazzle: Patti in Orange
4. Bracelet: Forever 21

Another way to wear Tangerine Tango?

Try Sodalite Blue and by the way, bird print is a trend this spring too!

Top From Asos
Skirt: Asos Simple Full Skirt with Paperback Waist

It's kind of amazing that such a intimidating color to most people, goes well with so many different other colors that I wouldn't have even thought of, honestly! I like Tangerine Tango along with Sweet Lilac,

whats your favorite variation?

So that's what the designer's think, what do you guys think Tangerine Tango can go with?

Please vote for your favorite color of the year here! Tangerine Tango is winning so far! For men's colors, check here. Thanx you guys so much for reading and I will be back with another color for tomorrow!

Fall Trend Report: How & What Colors to Wear: 3/3

So like I said in part 2 I hope this will help your shopping trips become easier and daring for this season. And yes, these trends for fall are pretty daring - I would say! This brings a whole new light to the whole color blocking attitude

This was the part of the series that called for alot of research. These again, are not my rules of course- these colors of the season and rules are all declared by the ingenious Pantone. Please visit the link to find out more about the trends. And btw I mean "rules" very lightly because there are no rules for fashion or makeup or anything like that. I am so exited to bring you the third & last part of the Fall Trend Report series: what colors to wear & how to wear them.

I have put so much time & effort into it and it has been so much fun researching! But I think the funnest part of it is that I get to share it with you all! If you haven't seen the first 2 installments, heres part 1 and part 2. I put them in an order that makes most sense to me, but I highly doubt you will get lost starting with this page so let's get started!!

  • Bamboo a standout yellow with a subtle green undertone. This dappled shade pairs dramatically with several of the top 10, including Phlox, Teal and Honeysuckle.
Shoes: Bakers Scarf: Apt 9 at Kohls Coat: Old Navy

  • Emberglow combine with Coffee Liqueúr for a classic look, or with Honeysuckle for something a bit more retro. Add a spark with shoes or a handbag in Emberglow, or perhaps a patterned scarf combining purpled Phlox or Deep Teal.
Pumps: Jessica Simpson at Bakers Skirt: Forever 21 Shirt: Shop Ruche Boots: Bakers

  • Honeysuckle I know you guys remember this one from Spring Trends! This is actually "color of the year", a reddish pink that works with any other color in the palette, especially fall staples like Coffee Liqueúr and Nougat. To add some intensity, pair it with complementary Bamboo. You can also pair it with Emberglow for a look that's a bit more retro Honeysuckle produces a healthy glow – great for cosmetics and holiday soirees.
Sweater:Old Navy Purse:Bakers Shirt:Old Navy Boots: Wet Seal

  • Phlox "a magical, deep purple with a hint of mystery, is an outstanding statement when worn on its own. Add Phlox to this season's neutrals to create a bit of drama, or combine it with Cedar, Deep Teal or Coffee Liqueúr for something extraordinary. To add even more excitement, pair Phlox with Honeysuckle or Bamboo against a Cedar background – a combination inspired by Mother Nature."   - This is the ultimate color this season. As you can tell from the pictures, phlox is everywhere!
Sweater:Old Navy Shirt:Abercrombie & Fitch Shoes:Shoedazzle Purse:Kohls Cedar Colored Jeans: True Religion Ring: Forever 21

  • Cedar- is a versatile, mid-tone neutral green. It is a natural with Deep Teal, and sophisticated and timeless with Phlox or Orchid Hush.
Boots:Jessica Simpson at Bakers Sweater: Oops, Same one used for Phlox from Old Navy Heels: Either Bakers or Shoedazzle but I am pretty sure Shoedazzle

  • Deep Teal, a strong, blue-toned green & is a great standard when used with Cedar, its color-wheel neighbor, & it is also a unique counterpoint to Honeysuckle.
Shoes: Sorry Again, but either Bakers or Shoedazzle Shirt: Old Navy Bag: Shoedazzle

    • Nougat is a deliciously warm camel tan, & is tastefully embellished by Phlox, Emberglow or Honeysuckle.
Shoes: Charlotte Russe Shirt: Simply Vera (Vera Wang for Target) Skirt: Forever 21 (Great Transition Piece for Fall!) Sweater: Old Navy

    • Quarry, a reliable medium gray, remains, as always, a practical, dependable staple. Coffee Liqueúr is rich & decadent, bringing a sense of elegance to fall, and is a savory alternative to basic black.

    • Orchid Hush, a unique tone of gray with complex orchid undertones, blends well with any other color in the palette
Earrings: Bakers Both Shirts: I believe I found them on Forever 21's website

P.S.- Before I started learning about gimp and collage's I always wanted to use other people's- but I wasn't sure if I was allowed or not. By all means, please do use my collage's/pictures that I made- they are for everybody to enjoy. The only thing I ask of you is that you link back to me (my blog). I would hate to spend all of this time making these and not letting anybody else use them. I would also hate if I spent a bunch of time making them, and someone else is using them and taking credit- Enjoy, & Thank You (:

Fall Trend Report: Clothing & Accessories: Part 2

Ok can I just say I that I had my word cut out for me with this series? On the other hand I am officially done writing & researching the whole series!...almost! haha- but I must say, not too shabby for a 24 year old living in Ohio- Ok I have wayyy too much time on my hands! But that actually makes this blog even better than I thought it could ever be- hopefully you guys love this part and the next, and hopefully it can make your near future shopping trips much more helpful & daring- I know it will mine!

What should we expect to walk off of the runway and hit our own back yards? 70's!! Ok so we all know that 70's means wide legged pants or flares aka "bell-bottoms" but this season there is so many variants to re-create the look.

-Bell Bottoms- I realize I just mentioned this but bell bottoms, wide-legged pants, whatever you wanna call it- anything with a wider leg, is on trend. To even go a step further with the trend for the bottoms, find pants with a higher waist.

key: My Favorites! all descriptions are Left to Right, Top to Bottom.

Left to Right: 1. Old Navy Skinny Sateen Flare Trousers 2. Abercrombie & Fitch  3.Idk again...sorry! 4. Abercrombie and Fitch

-Bow Blouses- We have seen the Kardashian's wear this trend this season on the show (remember the episode where Kris was hosting a wedding at her house and she was pressuring Kourtney to get married?) I wasnt too sure about the trend at that point but as I did research I noticed there was so many different kinds of bow blouses and you can find at least one to fit your own taste. Thumbs up for me. "Neat bow-blouses, especially ones with billowing or bishop sleeves. Particularly great are fabrics like silk and satin."

Hows this picture for randomness??!! 1.Old Navy 2.Vivienne Westwood 3.Paul Smith 4.(the girl in the corner) Kardashian Kollection for Sears 5.Micheal Kors  6.not sure?? buts its cute! 7. Old Navy

-Crochets & Knits- I love this trend! If your going for anything knitted or crocheted, to take it a step further with following trends, go with something over-sized. Me? I personally like either or.

    1.?But it is so cute!!!  2.(scarf)Charlotte Russe  3.Old navy  4.Old Navy 5.Abercrombie & Fitch

-Sheers & Heavy Metals-As you may be able to tell, alot, if not all, of these trends are being repeated from that past spring- with a slightly different twist. That holds true for all of the sheer pieces and all of the heavy metals. To go a step further with the heavy metals trend, mix your metals! take bronze with silver and pair it together.

1.ShopRuche.com Merry Mint Bow Top (sheer with the bow blouse trend- double whammy)  2. Bakers (metal-also with another trend chunky heels) 3. Bakers (metals) 4.Forever 21 set (mixed metals) 5. ShopRuche.com (sheer) 6. Shoedazzle (mixed metals) 7. Kardaahian Kollection for Sears (sheer top)

****I wish I would have found ShopRuche.com earlier when I first started this project because they have so much really cute on-trend pieces! I def. recommend to check that site out ladies!****

-Textures instead of Prints- Dont give away your prints just yet! Something tells me they will be trending very soon- A lot of designers are putting in textures where there usually is prints. I like it! Dont you? That Vera Wang Hoodie is Genius!

     1.Old Navy 2.A&F 3.A&F 4.Simply Vera (Vera Wang for Kohl's) 5.A&F 6.A&F

Some other notable trends from the 70's that are making their way into our closet's this seasons are: Thigh High Boots (love), those cut perfect fitting tuxedo blazers (I think would be great with a bow blouse, no?) & Burgundy Makeup, which I know you guys already know about that one!

Ok so to wrap it all up and put it in a nut shell:
-High Waisted Pants, Wide Leg Pants/Flares, Over-sized Crochets or Knits, Bow Blouses, Thigh High Boots, Form Fitting Blazers, Mixing Heavy Metals, Sheers, Textures opposed to prints - Did I miss any? Tell us in the comments!!!!

Your thinking now, what about fall colors and all that good stuff? I gotcha covered!! Be sure to come back for part 3 which will be all about the fall colors! We all remember color blocking, right? Color Blocking is still in, but it takes a different turn- I am loving it! So the 3rd and best part of the series is coming soon!!!!!

To find out more on these trends, check out my  Source
